At the end of 2017, for the first time, we launched a national competition to find a young composer of an iconic new tune for the Great Highland Bagpipe – Piping Hit 2018. Piping Hit 2018 was open to every school pupil in Scotland and we received entries from across Scotland which showcased some of great young musical talent we have in this country. And we are delighted to announce the winner – Archie MacKechnie from Dollar Academy!

14 year old Archie was the very worthy winner, with his 2/4 march, The 7.53 to Glasgow. Archie, who is actually an accordion player, and his friend and piper, Ruaridh Brown performed Archie’s winning composition at the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships on 11th March. Archie and Ruaridh wowed both the judges and audience and Archie collected some well deserved cash prizes for himself and also his school music department.
