The project gives local youngsters the chance to be part of a pipe band.

The Lewis and Harris Youth Pipe Band Project launched in September 2016, following an award from SSPDT of £15,000 across three years towards drumming workshops and Skype lessons. Initially, a taster session took place for interested pupils which successfully led to the development of a drum corps for the youth pipe band, the first of its kind in the local area.

The drum corps players have received regular tuition in the form of bass, tenor and snare drumming workshops at The Nicolson Institute, as well as online Skype lessons with D2 Percussion. The confidence and abilities of the pupils have grown from strength to strength over the past two years and the band have enjoyed performing at a range of public events, such as local summer shows and numerous fundraising events including ceilidhs and concerts. They have also enjoyed showcasing their new skills at local birthday celebrations and weddings, in addition to competing in The Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships.

Although the project has not been without its challenges, mainly the geographical location which has caused difficulties in providing face-to-face tuition, the project is progressing well. Most importantly, the project is giving local youngsters the opportunity to learn new skills, as well as enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being part of a pipe band.
