WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Rachel is enjoying exciting opportunities during her drumming journey.

Rachel Thom is our current Drumming Intern at SSPDT. Her love of pipe band drumming began at the age of 10 when she attended a school taster session and she hasn’t looked back since.

She joined West Lothian School’s Pipe Band in 2010, becoming Lead Drummer the following year. She is proud to have competed with WLSPB in major competitions and taken part in many parades including at the official opening of the Queensferry Crossing. During her time with the band they won two Stellar Award’s, The Trad Award and were crowned the 2014 Champion of Champions.

In 2012 Rachel joined The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland advancing to the senior band. She comments, “as a youth band member I have been privileged to take part in a variety of high profile and prestigious events, including performing for The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles. I’ve performed alongside Phil & Aly, the RSNO, Celtic Connections and I’ve taken part in the Avenches Tattoo in Switzerland, Glasgow Tattoo and The Ryder Cup to name a few.  My highlight has to be playing on stage at The Hydro with The Script – I still can’t believe it!”

Rachel also enjoys performing as a solo drummer. Highlights include performances in ‘West Lothian Far from Ypres’, ‘Innovation Drumming for Drinks’ and in the Drummer’s Fanfare at The Pearl Tent at The Worlds with Jim Kilpatrick and The Glasgow Police Pipe Band.

Recently Rachel has joined The Glasgow Police PB (Grade 1) and has just become the 2018 World Solo Drumming Champion! Rachel notes, “You get out what you put in. I have loved every moment of my drumming adventure, I have met some fantastic people and made lifelong friends from around the world. Being part of a pipe band is a great platform for socialising with other like-minded people. I am extremely lucky to have been supported by some great people from the pipe band world. I am so excited about the future as my drumming journey continues”.

Rachel is working on her tutoring qualifications this year during her internship with SSPDT. Based at Preston Lodge High School in East Lothian she is gaining valuable experience teaching pipe band snare drumming.
