WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Hannah’s drumming journey continues as her year-long internship with SSPDT comes to an end.
Hannah’s drumming journey started back in 2012 when she began pipe band bass drumming at Preston Lodge High School (PLHS). At that time, PLHS pipe band was a non-competing band but in the 2013 season the band made their debut as a competing Novice Pipe Band. The following year, the band placed in the top 6 at all the major championships and was crowned British Champions, experiences which Hannah was hugely proud to be a part of and describes as “a massive achievement as it was only the second year of competing”. Following such great successes, the end of the 2014 season saw the band promoted to the Juvenile grade.
In 2015, Hannah decided to change from bass to snare drumming. She still competed as the bass drummer for the band and played a further two seasons in this role. However, she then made the bold decision to compete as a snare drummer for the 2017 season. She is currently enjoying her final season as the Lead drummer of the Juvenile Band.
Hannah left school in 2017, with plans to attend university to study primary teaching. At that time, SSPDT advertised for a year-long drumming intern to teach pipe band snare drumming at Preston Lodge High School and its cluster primaries and take charge of the Preston Lodge Novice B band. The role was perfectly suited to Hannah, so she decided to defer university and apply for the position, which she was offered and accepted. She is now at the end of the year-long internship and describes the position as “one of the best opportunities I have had, and it has been very rewarding watching the pupils I teach excel in drumming and watching how much our Novice band has improved in such a short space of time”.
Hannah’s drumming journey with the PLHS pipe band has taken her all around the UK to attend the major championships. In addition she’s travelled to Germany, Belgium and China (TWICE!) to showcase “the wee band from the pans”. Hannah singles out travelling to China to attend Nanning’s International Folk Song festival as the highlight of her pipe band journey. A small group from the band performed in front of a stadium audience of around 50,000!
