The bagpipe is Scotland’s national instrument but pupils in state schools have few opportunities to learn to play.

In fact, in over a third of local authority instrumental music teams in Scotland working in state schools – where 44% of pupils live – there are no piping or pipe band drumming instructors at all.

The Fair Play for Pipes campaign advocates for balanced provision of piping and drumming tuition in state schools – on a par with other instruments.  SSPDT recognises the challenges of on-going budget cuts faced by councils and the consequent difficulties in expanding service, and therefore we work in partnership with council instrumental music services, providing cash grants, advice, instrument loans and by engaging co-funders.
