Much of SSPDT’s work and vision builds on the outstanding outcomes the pipe band programme in Preston Lodge High School and its cluster of primary schools which began in 2007 under the auspices of the East Lothian Pipes and Drums Trust.
Tuition is offered to all pupils from P5 upwards in Prestonpans Primary School, St. Gabriel’s Primary School, Cockenzie & Port Seton Primary School and Longniddry Primary school as well as Preston Lodge High School. Lee Moore is employed as a full-time piping tutor and Simon Grant as a full time drumming instructor. Rachel Cook provides part-time bass and tenor drumming tuition. Eilidh Alexander is a Modern Apprentice taking a Community Arts Diploma and working alongside Lee and the team learning how to teach piping in schools and how to develop schools pipe bands.
A junior and a senior band have now been formed. This year both bands competed in the World Championships and other leading competitions, as well as performing for their community and school. The young people have travelled in Scotland and as far as China and Germany by invitation. All band members who have graduated since 2012 have moved on to positive destinations in training, higher education and employment. Several have joined community bands.
